The ATC SCM40A active speakers have hand built cabinets that are a real wood with four colour finish options. The ATC speakers are offered in either cherry, black ash, satin black, and satin white. The size of each SCM40A speaker is 980mm in height, 370mm wide including the foot plate, and 340mm deep.
Question: What makes the SCM40A such a good speaker to buy?
Answer: Aside from being an active speaker, a significant aspect is the 3-way form factor and the highly esteemed midrange driver which is hand-made by ATC at the factory in England. Since the development of their mid and bass drivers they have further developed the tweeter beyond industry standards.
The SCM40 is ATC’s best-selling speaker in the active range. In terms of pound for pound value, you could not get a more sonically engaging and natural sounding speaker from any other amplifier speaker combination. Indeed it’s hard to argue that ATC are not at the very pinnacle of acoustical performance for loudspeaker technology.
If you have been looking to upgrade your speakers and amplifier please give due consideration to an active set-up. The benefits of an active system are immediately realised when comparing the two arrangements. We have both the passive and active versions on demonstration so you are welcome to audition them for yourself. A link for the passive version is HERE.
If you are unsure about the accolade we attribute to them please consider their impressive client list, it is quite something, see HERE.
So what makes the ATC SCM40A so impressive? First it would have to be that the crossover is fitted before amplification, which results in a cleaner sound. An active speaker is one in which the crossover is before the amplification. Some speaker manufacturers have the crossovers and amplifiers completely separate from the speakers and some manufacturers have the amplifiers attached in some way to the speaker itself, as is the case with ATC. Next what we like about the active 40’s is that each driver has its own amplification, which has been tuned matched to perfection over the years. Finally, what really sets this speaker apart is ATC’s world renowned mid-range driver, you have to come and have a listen to appreciate just how good it is. Oh and by the way ATC make all their own loudspeaker drivers!
A review from a customer:
“Thank you for demonstrating the SCM40 Active Speakers when I came in, as I never would have considered active speakers. What an incredible sound, I thought I was listening to something several times the price! Thank you so much for all your help.”
ATC SCM40A Speaker Positioning: Most people will know that speaker positioning is very important on the active and passive 40’s, just like any other speaker. A point worth mentioning is that if one of your speakers is closer to a side wall it may pull the sound towards that wall. If your preamplifier has tone controls it usually has a balance control too, so you move the phantom centre back to a central position. Corners are not best suited to speakers but other aspects of the room may have a greater impact on sound. Do try various placements to get the very best sound quality from the ATC SCM40A speakers.
